County Roundup: Lady Highlanders celebrate seniors with big win over Bucs

Cloudland 20, University High 0

Roan Mountain – The Lady Highlanders wanted to send their six seniors out with a bang, and this week, they did just that and then some. Using nine hits and nine walks, the Highlanders triumphed over the Lady Bucs 14-0. The Lady Highlanders struck first with an Isabella Christman single, plating two runs. Back-to-back doubles in the third inning by Eowyn McCoury and Saharra McKinney plated four more runs to extend their lead and then turned the game into a blowout in the bottom of the fourth by pushing across six more runs to leave no doubt.

The decisive final inning started with a single by Peyton Presswood and then Jayla Harper getting hit by a pitch and Savannah McCoury laying down a perfect bunt to load the bases. Eowyn McCoury hit a sac-fly to deep left to plate Presswood, and then McKinney roped a triple to center field, scoring two more runs. The Lady Highlanders then drew three walks in a row to score three more runs.

The combination of Reagan and Ryan Turbyfill once again proved solid on the mound. Ryan went four innings giving up no runs and surrendering one hit and five strikeouts while picking up the win for her team.

David Crockett 5, Elizabethton 3

Jonesborough – The Lady Cyclones fell behind 5-2 in the fourth inning but battled back all game, bringing the tying run to the plate in the final frame with the heart of their order coming up before a deep fly ball off the bat of Lela Byrd was corralled to end the game.

Grace Whaley had two hits in the contest, while Lilly McDuffie battled all night long for the Lady Cyclones going six innings and giving up just three earned runs while scattering 11 hits. McDuffie, Sadie Williams, Emma O’Quinn, and Mollie Johnson picked up a hit apiece in the loss.

North Greene 9, Unaka 4 

The Lady Rangers forced a tie in the sixth inning but weren’t able to hold the Lady Huskies off in the seventh. After a Mattie Salyer solo home run in the fifth inning, the Lady Rangers would score three in the sixth fueled by singles by Katlyn Dugger and Haley Taylor. Gracie Stout went four innings for the Lady Rangers giving up just one run and picking up six strikeouts.

Johnson County 17, Hampton 1

Mountain City – Hampton was unable to keep pace with the Longhorns as they used a six-run second inning to open up a 2-1 game. Maleah Scalf and Mallory Lamb picked up hits for the Lady Bulldogs.

Baseball 

Double Header – Game 1 – Hampton 18, Cloudland 3

Jaden Kuhn picked up three hits while Chance Point grabbed two hits and a triple as the Bulldogs rolled in the first game, exploding for 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning to end the game. The Bulldogs also picked up 11 steals in the game. Gabriel Lyons gave up just one earned run in the game and struck out 5.

Jacob Stinnett picked up a base hit for the Highlanders.

Game 2 – Hampton 20, Cloudland 8

Chance Point went 3-4 at the plate and picked up three RBIs while Jaden Kuhn got two base knocks and four RBIs as the Bulldogs plated eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to win the game. Chase Davenport chipped in two hits as well.

Tristan Lowrey paced the Highlanders with two hits including a double while Gouge, Jacob Stinnett, Cooper Smith, Colin Davis, Bryson Peppers, and Thomas Job all collected hits for the Highlanders.
