GRAY — Daniel Boone used its newfound pitching formula to clinch a share of the District 1-4A regular season title on Wednesday evening.
The Lady Trailblazers defeated Science Hill 9-0.
“One thing about this bunch that is really fun to be around is that they are going to compete,” Boone head coach Jeremy Jenkins said. “They’ve played a lot of ball, and they’re excited. They’re really playing well at the right time.”
The Lady Blazers (19-10, 6-1) got a big boost in the third inning. Kyleigh Bacon delivered her third home run in two games, she sent an 0-0 offering deep to center field for a three-run blast, making the contest 4-0.
“It feels good to get her going a little bit more,” Jenkins said.
Pitching shined for Daniel Boone, as the tandem of Ava Saul and Kaylea Osborne shut down the Lady Toppers (16-6, 3-3). Saul got the start, and, as has been the recipe for success as of late, tossed the odd-numbered innings while Osborne got the even.
Saul tossed four innings and just one hit and did not walk a batter, while Osborne allowed just one hit and one walk working the second, fourth and sixth.
Saul believes that the alternating of innings worked had allowed both her and Osborne to stay sharp.
“It’s been enjoyable,” Saul said. “I think me and (Osborne) are staying a lot fresher, instead of throwing 120 or so pitches a game.”
She added that the duo welcomed the unorthodox implementation of the dominant arms.
“Me and ‘Ozzy’ said it from the beginning, we wanted to alternate because we’re both pretty good,” Saul said. “But I loved it at the beginning, and it’s really working well for us as a team.”
The Lady Blazer starting pitcher also contributed with the bat. Saul singled into right to plate a run in the fourth, extending the Boone lead to five. She added another RBI hit in the sixth, part of a four-run frame.
Daniel Boone can potentially clinch the conference outright with a win on Thursday, as they take on the West Ridge Wolves in Blountville.
