Lady Cyclones fall on Senior Day to Unicoi Co.

As the regular season draws to a close, the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones were looking to send their two seniors off with a win against their perennial rival, the Unicoi Co. Lady Blue Devils on Senior Day.
And although the Lady Cyclones managed to outhit their visitors from Erwin, the Lady Blue Devils made an early lead stand up to game’s end to take a 5-2 Upper Lakes Conference victory over Elizabethton.
Lightning struck with two outs in the first inning for Unicoi Co. when Kyndal Engle took a Lilly McDuffie pitch and planted it over the left-center field wall for a two-out, 1-0 Lady Blue Devil lead.
After holding the Lady Cyclones scoreless in the bottom of the first inning, the Lady Devils erupted for four more runs in the top of the second.
Kianna Woodward drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second base by Faith Bennett. Miley Woodward’s single scored Kianna Woodward to make it a 2-0 Unicoi lead.
The Lady Cyclones had a chance to get out of the inning with two outs but an error allowed the inning to continue. A double off the bat of Kinley Carver that just missed being a homer allowed two more Lady Devils to touch home plate extending the lead to 4-0.
Aaliyah Engle scored Carver when she followed with a back-to-back double and the Lady Blue Devils were in front 5-0.
The Lady Cyclones sliced the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the inning as Mikina Blackwell opened with a single. McDuffie helped her cause when she laced a run-scoring single to plate Blackwell.
The game would remain scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Lady Cyclones tacked on their second run of the contest.
An O’Quinn single scored courtesy runner Macie Reed with the final run of the contest for EHS.
Johnson, O’Quinn, Blackwell, and McDuffie each collected a pair of hits in the contest. Lela Byrd added a hit as well.
McDuffie took the loss from the pitching circle tossing a complete game allowing the five runs, two earned, while striking out seven Lady Devil batters and walking two.
